Women in Paleontology

π‘·π’‚π’π’†π’π’π’•π’π’π’π’ˆπ’š is a multidisciplinary field of science where the majority of its advancements are founded upon collaborative efforts in biology, chemistry, physics, and geology. Yet despite its highly interdisciplinary nature, its history is plagued by racial discrimination and misogyny.

In the early days of geology, when a huge part of this discipline was being excluded from women, practicing paleontology was more socially acceptable because women were able to pursue it independently and with minimal need for conducting field work, since research could be done mainly through the collection of specimens. This is especially the case for vertebrate paleontology.

Micropaleontology, on the other hand, was deemed as more of a woman’s field due to the discipline requiring patience, diligence, reliability, and perseveranceβ€”traits that were more socially expected from women.

As we wrap up this year’s International Women’s Month, we feature several outstanding female paleontologists who made history as they pursued their passion for understanding the history of the Earth and its ancient life. Not only do we celebrate their excellence, but also their courage to pursue paths less travelled, strength to challenge societal norms, and their dedication to expand what we know about lifeβ€”past and present.
