On March 10, 2025, the Nannoworks Laboratory received a donation of one polarizing microscope and a collection of 102 books, research articles, and essays from Alex Carlos, an alumnus of UP B.S. Geology Batch 1978.
Dr. Alyssa M. Peleo-Alampay, head of the Nannoworks Laboratory, received and toured the guest as he visited the Nannoworks rooms and laboratories in the basement of the National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS). A “Geologist of Scale” shirt and Nannoworks tumbler were also given to Alex Carlos as tokens of gratitude for the charitable work.
The Nikon microscope was set up at the Scanning Electron Microscopy Laboratory (Room 013) on August 14, 2025. This will be used together with the other microscopes in the laboratory by both undergraduate and graduate students for class and research, specifically petrographic and microfossil analyses.
On the other hand, the collection of scientific and geologically relevant literary works was catalogued and stored at the Nannoworks Laboratory (Rooms 012, 013, and 014). The collection covers a variety of topics from pioneering books like the “Theory of the Earth” by James Hutton to locally significant literature such as the “Geology and Oil Possibilities in the Philippines” by Grant W. Corby and others. The majority of the collection deals with paleontology, petroleum geology, and stratigraphy, with a few on structural geology, mineralogy, statistics, and remote sensing.
