From February 19 to 26, 2020, a week-long Alternative Learning Session in Geology was held for its second year at the UP NIGS-UPGAA Geology Museum. A total of 139 participants, consisting of homeschooling students and parents attended the event. Ms. Maria Gracia C.Padrique, an alumna of NIGS lead the group by inviting several homeschooling families in the nearby communities.
The Alternative Learning Session consists of a Museum tour with the junior faculty, research associates, and student volunteers of the Institute serving as the guides. Aside from the tour, hands-on learning activities and games, as well as an interactive demonstration of the Earthquake Drill was done during the learning sessions. The goal of the event was to provide a learning experience outside of the typical classroom. While learning about basic concepts on earth science, the participants were also able to see and touch actual geologic specimens such as minerals, rocks, and fossils, and get valuable tips on what to do before and when a geohazard occurs.
