The SEM Laboratory is located at Room 013 in the basement of the National Institute of Geological Sciences. The lab houses a scanning electron microscope (SEM) with EDX analysis. SEM is used to image very tiny material, with magnification can reach up to 300,000X. EDX analysis identifies the point elemental composition of a material.

The lab also houses phase contrast microscopes with magnification reaching up to 1000X. These microscopes are mainly used to identify microfossils, mostly calcareous nannofossils with sizes down to 2 microns. They are used both for research and teaching undergraduate and graduate micropaleontology classes.
